How Difficult is the Gosaikunda Trek with Helambu?

The Gosaikunda Trek with Helambu is considered a moderately challenging trek because of the high altitude, steep sections, and remote mountain terrain. The trek starts at a relatively lower elevation, with trails ranging from gentle to steep sections. As you gain elevation, the air becomes thinner. You may need to slow your pace and take more frequent breaks.

One of the most challenging parts is crossing Lauribina La Pass, which requires navigating rocky, steep terrain that can be covered with snow or ice outside the peak trekking months. For first-time trekkers, the pass can be a significant test of physical endurance.

    helambu.webp

Although it does not require technical climbing or mountaineering experience, the increase in altitude, long walking days, and steep sections can make the journey difficult for less-experienced travellers. A good level of cardiovascular fitness and preparation for multi-day hiking are recommended.

Gosaikunda Trek with Helambu Itinerary (12 Days)

12 days on the trail: altitude, walking time, stays and meals for each day.

    12 days

    1. Day 01Arrival in Kathmandu

As you arrive in Kathmandu, our representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. Based on your arrival time, if you have spare time, stroll around Thamel and visit a vibrant local market in the evening. Pick up any last-minute gear and be prepared for the next day's adventure.

    2. Day 02Drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche

Your Gosaikunda Trek with Helambu adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu. It takes around 6-7 hours to reach Dhunche. Following the scenic road, enjoy green hills, charming villages, and bustling markets, including Trishuli Bazaar.

The road climbs steadily into the hills, offering glimpses of the Trishuli River and distant peaks before reaching Dhunche, the administrative headquarters of the Langtang region.

    3. Day 03Trek from Dhunche to Thulo Syabru

After having breakfast, start your trek following a gentle trail. Your permit will be checked at the Langtang National Park checkpoint before you continue along the trail. Cross suspension bridges, walk through lush forests, pass charming rural settlements, and trek alongside terraced farm fields as the trek gradually gains elevation.

As you follow the path, you’ll reach Thulo Syabru, a small mountain settlement inhabited largely by the Tamang community.

    4. Day 04Trek to Singa Gomba

Today, you gain significant elevation. Walk through a steep, prolonged ascent through dense forests of oak, hemlock, and rhododendron.

The trail eventually opens onto a ridge where the tranquil monastery of Singa Gomba (Chandanbari) sits. Take time to rest and explore the nearby areas. Explore the local yak cheese factory and enjoy the evening.

    5. Day 05Trek to Lauribinayak

The trail continues upwards along the ridgeline, offering increasingly dramatic vistas. This day is also a challenging part of the Gosaikunda trek. As you gain altitude, the tree line gradually disappears, and the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and alpine.

From Lauribinayak, the trail opens to wider views of Langtang and Ganesh Himal, particularly in clear weather.

    6. Day 06Trek to Gosaikunda

This is the highlight of the Gosaikunda Trek with Helambu. A steady, rocky climb brings you to the sacred high-altitude lake basin. Along the way, you’ll pass Saraswati Kunda and Bhairav Kunda before reaching the alpine lake.

Spend your evening roaming around Gosaikunda and surrounding shrines, depending on weather and trail conditions. Admire the clear waters of the lake and surrounding Himalayas.

    7. Day 07Trek to Ghopte via Lauribina La Pass

You’ll walk for several hours, crossing the rugged Lauribina La Pass before descending toward Ghopte. The trail is rugged and steep, requiring careful pacing.

Continue descending toward Ghopte, a mountain settlement in the region.

    8. Day 08Trek to Tharepati

The trail features short, steep climbs and descents through mossy forest paths and old bamboo groves as you continue deeper into the Helambu region.

Tharepati is a ridge-top settlement that acts as a natural viewing platform overlooking the deep Helambu valley and the rolling green hills below.

    9. Day 09Trek to Tarke Gyang

Descend through beautiful, dense forests before crossing a river valley and climbing up into Tarke Gyang. Tarke Gyang is a major settlement in Helambu, known for its stone-built houses and Buddhist monasteries.

    10. Day 10Trek to Sermathang

Continue trekking through the Helambu region toward Sermathang. The trail is scenic, passing through lush green forest, mani walls, and providing opportunities to witness traditional rural villages, local lifestyle, and cultural sites of the Helambu communities.

Arrive in Sermathang, another traditional Hyolmo village where you can learn more about local traditions and enjoy sweeping views of the Jugal Himal range.

    11. Day 11Trek to Melamchi Bazaar and drive to Kathmandu

Your final day on the trail descends steadily through terraced hillsides and vibrant farm fields down to the bustling riverside hub of Melamchi Bazaar. Here, your trek ends and you take a private vehicle for a 4-5 hour drive back to Kathmandu.

    12. Day 12Final Departure

Today is the final day of your journey. If you have time, go for last-minute souvenir shopping or rest at your hotel.  Depending on your flight schedule, our representative will drop you off at the airport for your flight back home, carrying memories of the trek with you.

      Great Trek to ABC

I completed the Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill trek with my partner through Peaceful Nepal in May 2026 and had an amazing time! Bishnu was an amazing guide throughout the experience, organising everything and answering all our questions. He was able to change our itinerary on the trek to suit our walking pace and the conditions each day. Bishnu handled all the logistics throughout the trip, including airport pickup, transfers to Pokhara and our bus to Chitwan after, and accomodation. All accomodation we stayed at was pleasant and clean. The trek itself was also amazing! Would definitely recommend both ABC and Peaceful Nepal.

      Excellent ABC experience

I have just completed the Annapurna Base Camp trek and would like to sincerely thank my guide, Som Giri, and my porter, Nepal Giri, for making this 6-day journey such a wonderful and memorable experience.Som Giri was an excellent guide — highly professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly caring throughout the trek. He always paid close attention to my pace, health, and comfort, and shared valuable insights about the mountains, local culture, and daily trekking routes. His calm attitude and experience gave me great confidence and peace of mind every day.Nepal Giri was equally outstanding. He was strong, reliable, and always smiling, even on the most challenging sections of the trail. His support and positive energy truly made a big difference, and I felt well taken care of during the entire journey. Both Som Giri and Nepal Giri went above and beyond their duties, showing genuine care, teamwork, and professionalism. I really appreciated having fruit every day, which made a big difference…

      Langtang Trek

I had an unforgettable 7-day trek through the Langtang Valley, climbing all the way up to Tserko Ri at 4,985 meters. Really enjoyed the snow-capped mountains, lush green forests, countless waterfalls and incredible wildlife (if you’re lucky you might spot a rare red panda) throughout the trek. Huge thanks to my guide Bishnu from Peaceful Nepal Treks and Tours. His deep knowledge of every trail, wildflowers and wildlife along the way made this adventure truly special.

18 days Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit combined trek!

Namaste!I did a 18 days trekking tour covering the Manaslu and Annapurna circuit combined with peaceful Nepal trek and it was absolute perfection.Started with the planning phase where email and what's app inquiries were answered immediately and the itinerary was planned together and agreed upon. The trek was long and hard but this team made it bearable by always finding good accomodations (95% of my room has electric socket to charge my electronics , attached toilet which is a huge advantage and good food). The guide also brought along medical kit (which many company doesnt) and often was being asked to share medical supplies/medicine to others.Bonus is the guide love to take pictures and videos along the way so you can get nice documentation too even when you are too lazy to get your camera/phone out.Main highlights on this trip :1. Manaslu basecamp : not too many people come here for "rest day" but we made it. It was HARD but i am glad we did it. One of the best experiences on this tr…

Gosaikunda Trek with Helambu: Know Before You Go

Teahouses, food, permits, connectivity and preparation: the practical details, one topic at a time.

What Makes the Gosaikunda Trek with Helambu Special?

This route combines three distinct experiences: the sacred landscape of Gosaikunda, the high-altitude crossing of Lauribina La, and the cultural heritage of Helambu. The trail moves through forests, alpine terrain, traditional settlements, monasteries, and mountain valleys, making it more diverse than a trek focused on a single destination.

Gosaikunda Lake: Gosaikunda Lake is a sacred alpine lake that holds deep spiritual and religious significance for Hindus and Buddhists. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 4,380 m above sea level. Gosaikunda Lake, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is the main highlight of this trek. During Janai Purnima, a large number of devotees visit this lake to seek blessings.

Lauribina La Pass: Crossing the Lauribina La Pass is a difficult yet rewarding part of the trek. At approximately 4,610 meters, the pass challenges trekkers physically. From the pass, trekkers can enjoy the rocky, wild alpine landscape of Langtang and the gentle, emerald cultural landscape of Helambu.

Langtang Himalayan Views: Spectacular Himalayan views of the Himalayan ranges are one of the biggest attractions of this trek. On clear days, you’ll see Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, and Dorje Lakpa. The trek offers more than Himalayan vistas: lush green hills and valleys are also major highlights of the route.

Changing Landscapes with Altitude: You trek through two distinct vegetation zones as elevation changes. In the lower and middle elevation zones, you’ll see rhododendron and pine forests. As you gain elevation, the landscapes gradually change from dense forest to alpine landscapes.

Traditional Mountain Villages: Unlike highly commercialized trekking routes, the villages along this path retain traditional mountain lifestyles. Staying in local teahouses allows trekkers to experience the simple hospitality of mountain communities while also supporting small local businesses along the trekking route.

Buddhist Monasteries and Stupas: The Gosaikunda and Helambu regions are strongly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. Along the way, you can see religious and cultural sites such as Singa Gomba, monasteries of Tarke Gyang, chortens, mani walls, and stupas. These sites reflect the deeply rooted Buddhist culture and traditions.

    Helambu Culture and Local Lifestyle:

Experience the warm hospitality of the Hyolmo people, a community with distinctive culture, identity, beliefs, traditions, architecture, festivals, food, and social practices. Visiting traditional villages and interacting with locals provides an opportunity to learn about the unique cultural identity and way of life of the Helambu region.

    Best Season to Trek

Choosing the right season can make a significant difference to your trekking experience. Generally, spring and autumn are considered the most favourable seasons for trekking in Nepal. Both seasons generally offer favourable weather, good visibility, and beautiful mountain scenery.

Spring (March-May): Spring brings colorful blooms across the hills. The green hills become vibrant with blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers. Daytime temperatures are generally warm and comfortable for long hours of trekking. Clear visibility and picturesque views of the surrounding Langtang Lirung, Jugal, and Ganesh Himal, along with green hills and valleys, make spring a beautiful time to trek.

Autumn (September-November): Autumn season is widely regarded as one of the best seasons for trekking in the Nepal Himalayas. This season offers crystal-clear views of the Himalayas and surrounding hills. Days are warm, and mornings and nights are generally cooler as you gain altitude. Also, two major festivals of Nepal are held during this season, i.e., Dashain and Tihar, which provide an opportunity to experience the country’s rich cultural traditions.

Winter and monsoon are generally less favourable for this trek. Winter brings cold temperatures and snowfall at higher elevations, which can make it difficult to walk on the trail. Monsoon season brings rainfall. Heavy rainfall can cause slippery trails and increase the risk of landslides. So, trekking during these seasons can be potentially difficult and risky.

    Accommodation During the Trek

Throughout your Gosaikunda Trek with Helambu, you’ll stay in local teahouses and lodges. Rooms are basic but cozy and warm, featuring twin-sharing beds with warm blankets and a shared bathroom.

As you gain altitude, the facilities become more limited but remain comfortable. Hot showers and electricity are generally more available in lower elevations, while facilities become more limited at higher-altitude teahouses. However, you can still expect warm hospitality from the local hosts.

    Food and Drinks on Trek

Meals and drinks are available at local teahouses or mountain lodges throughout the trek. Dal Bhat (rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry, and pickles) is one of the most common and filling meals for trekkers. Other common options include pasta, pancakes, porridge, and momo.

Hot tea and coffee are widely available. Soft drinks are also available. It is advisable to limit alcohol at high altitude and exercise caution with meat, particularly where food storage and hygiene may be uncertain.

    Gosaikunda Trek with Helambu Cost

The total cost depends on itinerary duration, package type, guide and porter, accommodation style, group size, choice of transport, and level of inclusion. Group treks generally cost less per person, while private trips cost more and offer greater flexibility.

A standard, fully managed 12-day trek may cost around US$700-US$1,100 per person. This estimated cost typically covers all mandatory permits, teahouse accommodation, meals, your licensed guide, and porter services.

    Show all 11 topics

    Permits Requirement

To trek in the Gosaikunda with Helambu, you’ll need to obtain the Langtang National Park Permit, TIMS, and the Shivapuri National Park entry fee.

Permit requirements and fees can change, so trekkers should check the latest regulations with the relevant authorities or a registered trekking agency before departure.

    Gosaikunda Trek Altitude and Acclimatization

The trek begins at around 1,950 m in Dhunche and reaches 4,610 m at the Lauribina La Pass within the first week. The rapid increase in elevation makes acclimatization an important part of the trek.

As you gain altitude, you may experience symptoms of altitude sickness, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, and shortness of breath. To minimize the risks of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), our 12-day itinerary breaks up the ascent by stopping at Thulo Syabru, Singa Gomba, and Lauribinayak before reaching Gosaikunda.

    Safety and Altitude Tips

Walk Steady: Maintain your walking pace. Don’t rush to reach the teahouse early. Walking steadily makes your body comfortable and gives you energy to walk comfortably throughout the trek.

Drink Enough Water: Stay adequately hydrated during your walking days on the trail. Staying hydrated helps support your physical performance and reduces the risk of dehydration. Drink soups, herbal tea, or water-rich fruits or vegetables. Dehydration can contribute to fatigue, headaches, and reduced physical performance.

Acclimatize Properly: Acclimatization is crucial while trekking at high altitude. It helps your body adjust to the changing altitude.

Trek with a Guide: Always trek with an experienced local guide. They help you trek smoothly and safely. A licensed guide helps you with communication, navigation, emergencies, accommodation, and many other things.

Listen to Your Body: While trekking at high altitude, listen to your body. If you develop any AMS symptoms, communicate with your guide and seek help. If the symptoms worsen, descend to a lower elevation and seek medical help.

Check Weather Conditions: Every day before starting to walk on the trail, check weather conditions. The weather at higher elevations is unpredictable, so always be prepared for changing weather conditions.

Wear Appropriate Clothing: Keep your head, neck, and chest warm and protected from high-altitude winds.
