Blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers make the trek colourful and fresh, which makes the forests alive. Cleared skies also provide mountainous views that are wonderful for taking photographs.

The other season that this trek can be best done is during Autumn, September-November. The air is clear and clean after the monsoon, providing a sharp view of Kanchenjunga and the neighboring mountains. The climate is predictable, days are pleasant, and nights are cool. It is the best season in which trekkers can enjoy the clear view of the mountains and the predictable weather.

How Difficult Is Kanchenjunga North Base Camp

The level of difficulty of the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek is moderate to challenging. It is no hiking adventure – you must be serious with it. The Kanchenjunga North Base Camp is a trip that requires high levels of physical stamina, strong psychology, and prior experience in high altitude. Before attempting the trip, you must gain experience walking on steep and rough terrain, multi-day stretches without medical attention, and extreme elevations of more than 5,140 meters (16,873 feet).

Your day will be spent on challenging hiking, climbing steep paths up and down, crossing rocky alpine passes, and unreliable crossings of glacial rivers, for 6 or 8 hours. Everyday walking for such a long period of time, this journey puts a test on the body and mind. The isolated nature of the area implies that there will be no medical team to assist you. So you are on your own, and you must always have a certified professional guide to guide you on the Kanchenjuang North Base Camp trek.

    Key Challenges You’ll Face

Extreme Altitude & Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) Risk: Going higher than 5,000m will
make trekkers prone to altitude-related diseases. The itinerary includes proper acclimatization days, but the trekkers should pay careful attention, observe the symptoms, and be ready to go back down. Previous experience at altitude is a must.

Rugged and Technical Terrain: On this trek, you will walk on thin and rough trails, loose scree and bare ridgelines. There is also the problem of crossing glacial rivers, which may or may not have bridges, which means you should have a balance, care and sound footing.

Isolation and Limited Infrastructure: It is one of the most remote Nepal treks. Teahouses in upper places are primitive. So most of the trekkers carry essential items with them. Additionally, health centers are days away, so it is necessary to have emergency preparedness and mentorship.

Long Duration & Physical Endurance: Stamina and regular pacing are of utmost importance with the daily trek of between 6 and 8 hours walking over two to three weeks. It requires hard pre-trek training and psychological discipline to succeed.

Unpredictable Mountain Weather: The temperatures are likely to drop to below freezing, and bad weather can make trails very wet and dangerous. For a sudden change in the weather conditions, you need to have good equipment and flexibility.

    Nature’s Bounty and Wildlife Wonders

The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area teems with exceptional biodiversity, nurtured by the region’s heavy summer rains. While sightings of the elusive Snow Leopard are rare, trekkers often encounter Himalayan wildlife such as red pandas, Assamese macaques, and black bears. This protected sanctuary is a haven for nature enthusiasts, offering glimpses of untouched flora and fauna.

    A Cultural Tapestry

Immerse yourself in the vibrant cultures of the Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa communities. Trekking through remote villages, you’ll witness their enduring traditions and warm hospitality. Tibetan refugee settlements along the route add another layer of cultural richness, making this trek an experience that blends adventure with human connection.

    Adventure Meets Serenity

Kanchenjunga is more than a mountain; it’s a sacred sanctuary revered by locals as the abode of the gods. Since its official opening to explorers in 1950, the region has drawn adventurers seeking its unspoiled beauty and spiritual essence. Declared a conservation zone in 1988, this trek offers a harmonious blend of natural splendor and cultural discovery.

      Great Trek to ABC

I completed the Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill trek with my partner through Peaceful Nepal in May 2026 and had an amazing time! Bishnu was an amazing guide throughout the experience, organising everything and answering all our questions. He was able to change our itinerary on the trek to suit our walking pace and the conditions each day. Bishnu handled all the logistics throughout the trip, including airport pickup, transfers to Pokhara and our bus to Chitwan after, and accomodation. All accomodation we stayed at was pleasant and clean. The trek itself was also amazing! Would definitely recommend both ABC and Peaceful Nepal.

      Excellent ABC experience

I have just completed the Annapurna Base Camp trek and would like to sincerely thank my guide, Som Giri, and my porter, Nepal Giri, for making this 6-day journey such a wonderful and memorable experience.Som Giri was an excellent guide — highly professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly caring throughout the trek. He always paid close attention to my pace, health, and comfort, and shared valuable insights about the mountains, local culture, and daily trekking routes. His calm attitude and experience gave me great confidence and peace of mind every day.Nepal Giri was equally outstanding. He was strong, reliable, and always smiling, even on the most challenging sections of the trail. His support and positive energy truly made a big difference, and I felt well taken care of during the entire journey. Both Som Giri and Nepal Giri went above and beyond their duties, showing genuine care, teamwork, and professionalism. I really appreciated having fruit every day, which made a big difference…

      Langtang Trek

I had an unforgettable 7-day trek through the Langtang Valley, climbing all the way up to Tserko Ri at 4,985 meters. Really enjoyed the snow-capped mountains, lush green forests, countless waterfalls and incredible wildlife (if you’re lucky you might spot a rare red panda) throughout the trek. Huge thanks to my guide Bishnu from Peaceful Nepal Treks and Tours. His deep knowledge of every trail, wildflowers and wildlife along the way made this adventure truly special.

18 days Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit combined trek!

Namaste!I did a 18 days trekking tour covering the Manaslu and Annapurna circuit combined with peaceful Nepal trek and it was absolute perfection.Started with the planning phase where email and what's app inquiries were answered immediately and the itinerary was planned together and agreed upon. The trek was long and hard but this team made it bearable by always finding good accomodations (95% of my room has electric socket to charge my electronics , attached toilet which is a huge advantage and good food). The guide also brought along medical kit (which many company doesnt) and often was being asked to share medical supplies/medicine to others.Bonus is the guide love to take pictures and videos along the way so you can get nice documentation too even when you are too lazy to get your camera/phone out.Main highlights on this trip :1. Manaslu basecamp : not too many people come here for "rest day" but we made it. It was HARD but i am glad we did it. One of the best experiences on this tr…

Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek: Know Before You Go

Teahouses, food, permits, connectivity and preparation: the practical details, one topic at a time.

Food On Kanchenjunga North Base Camp

Peaceful Nepal will provide you with three meals on your Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek journey. Breakfast and dinner will be served in the tea house, and for lunch, your trekking guide will choose the place to eat. You can choose the veg and non-veg options in the tea at the lower tea house, but this service might be limited. So if you have any dietary consideration make sure to contact the tour operator to know more in detail.

Here are the basic menus that you can expect in the tea house:

    • Breakfast items: Tibetan bread or chapati, Eggs (boiled, fried, omelet), Porridge (oats, corn, or wheat), Pancakes, Toast with Butter, jam, or honey, Muesli or cornflakes, Hot tea or coffee

    • Lunch and Dinner: Dal Bhat (rice, lentil soup, vegetables, pickle), Fried rice (veg or egg), Noodles (veg or egg), Thukpa (Tibetan noodle soup), Momos (dumplings – veg or limited non-veg), Pasta or spaghetti (simple style), Potatoes (boiled, fried, mashed), Seasonal vegetable curry

    • Beverage: Black tea, milk tea, lemon tea, Coffee, Hot lemon or ginger tea, Herbal tea and Butter tea and soft drinks.

Accommodation On Kanchenjunga North Base Camp

Kanchenjunga has a basic tea house compared to other famous trekking trails, such as EBC and Annapurna. This is due to remote destinations and very few travellers head to Kanchenjunga for trekking. So don’t expect a luxury room and service during the trek. Here are the facilities you can get in the Accommodation inside the tea house:

    • Sharing room: Twin sharing bed with amenities like blanket, pillow cover and mattress. We recommend that you carry a sleeping bag for comfort.

    • Communal dining: There will be open dining where travellers gather to eat.

    • Bathroom: No fancy bathroom, just a squat toilet and only running water.

    • Heating and Room Comfort: There will be no AC or room heating in the tea house. The rooms are fundamental just for rest and sleep.

Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Vs South

Mt Kanchenjunga has two base camps, i.e., Kanchenjunga North and South. Compared to the South, Kanchenjunga North is a little tougher due to being more remote, the involvement of more time above 4,000m and glacier crossings. Trekkers can also combine both North Base Camp and South Base Camp, which is known as the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek.

How To Reach Kanchenjunga North Base Camp

Kanchenjunga North Base Camp lies in the remote north-eastern part of Nepal. The starting point of the trek is Sekathum, which is around 39–40 km from Taplejung Airport. First, we will take a flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur airport and ride to Sekathum. We will arrange the flight and private vehicle to reach the trekking point. The cost of flight and road transportation will be included in the trekking package.

Preparation Tips For the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp

To make your Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek comfortable and meaningful, here are some expert tips that you can follow:

Get high altitude trekking experience: All the participants who want to join this trek, we suggest you do a trek that involves crossing mountain passes, long walking days and hiking above 5,000m. With this, you will gain experience in acclimatization, your body’s response to altitude.

Prepare Physically and Mentally: Make yourself physically and mentally strong. For this, you can do exercises that build endurance and increase strength. For mental strength, do some Yoga and also learn breathing techniques.

Learn Altitude Sickness and Preventive measures: Altitude sickness symptoms, such as Headache, Dizziness, can affect your entire travel plan to reach base camp. So to avoid this, follow the standard itinerary, avoid shortcuts, walk at your own pace, hydrate regularly, and eat a healthy, balanced diet. And most important is to take Diamox medicine, which helps to reduce the effects of altitude sickness.

Pack all essentials: To survive in the remote trek, you should pack all the necessary things like personal medicine, quality trekking clothes and gear, first aid, and other travel essentials.

Budgeting: Another essential thing is to carry enough cash, as you won’t find an ATM and Bank in the rural village of the Kanchenjunga region. We suggest you carry around NPR 30,000 – 50,000 for emergency and personal use.

Prepare for unexpected situations: Sometimes things won’t go as we plan. Therefore, we must be ready for difficult times. For this plan, add 2-3 buffer days to your trekking itinerary and make yourself mentally strong.

    Show all 13 topics

Facilities On Kanchenjunga North Base Camp: Wifi, Electricity, Hot Shower, etc

WIFI: During the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Wifi is available only in the lower region. Due to remote destinations at high altitude Wifi will be spotty or not available. When you use WIFI at the tea house, they charge you around USD 1-3.

Electricity: Tea houses often rely on solar power and small local hydropower at higher altitudes. So even though you can have proper electricity in the lower region for backup in the higher region, we suggest you carry a high capacity of powerbank.

Hot Shower: Trekkers can get a hot shower in the lower altitude tea house, but at the high altitude tea house shower is often not available.
