We began our Kanchenjunga trek on July 1, 2024. Initially, we moved to the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan International Airport for our flight to Bhadrapur. The flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur took approximately 45 minutes. From there, we embarked on a 7-hour, 251 km drive to Taplejung by private jeep. After this long journey, we rested at a guesthouse in Taplejung for the night.
Day 2: After breakfast, we continued our journey with a 6-hour drive to Sekhathung.
Day 3: Today marked the beginning of our actual trekking adventure. From Sekhathum, we hiked towards Amjilosa, reaching Amilapsa after 5 hours. Along the way, we crossed several suspension bridges over the Tamor River and passed through lush green alpine forests, making for an exhilarating journey.
Day 4: After breakfast, we pressed on towards Gyabla, situated at 2730m above sea level. Despite it being monsoon season in Nepal, we felt the cold. It took us 5 hours to reach Gyabla. There, we enjoyed boiled potatoes and garlic noodle soup, milk coffee, and dal bhat with locally roasted ingredients. The teahouse was comfortable, though not offering luxury amenities.
Days 5-7 and 8-10: Continuing onward, we reached the North Base Camp of Kanchenjunga, passing through various small ethnic settlements such as Khangbachen and Lonak. The altitude at Kanchenjunga North Base Camp is 5135m above sea level. On the day we arrived, the weather was somewhat overcast, but the following day, upon returning to Lonak, we were greeted with crystal-clear skies, affording us splendid views of the entire area. On 9th day, we come back to Ghunsa and then back to Gyabla in 8th day.
Days 11-14: During these days, we returned to Bhadrapur, taking in more of the natural beauty and cultural richness along the way.
Day 15: On the 15th day, we flew back to Kathmandu from Bhadrapur.
Our journey to Kanchenjunga was a remarkable adventure filled with awe-inspiring landscapes and cultural encounters. From the bustling start at Tribhuvan International Airport to the serene moments in remote villages and majestic views at Kanchenjunga North Base Camp, every step brought us closer to the heart of Nepal’s natural beauty. Returning via Bhadrapur allowed us to reflect on the unforgettable experiences we shared, from crossing suspension bridges over rushing rivers to savoring local cuisine in cozy teahouses. This trek not only challenged us physically but also enriched our spirits with the warmth and hospitality of the Nepalese people. As we departed Kathmandu, we carried with us cherished memories and a deep appreciation for the wonders of the Himalayas.
