Mt Manaslu, standing at a stunning height of 8,163m/26,782ft, is a magnificent peak that has captured the imagination of adventurers around the world! Known as the eighth-highest mountain on Earth, it rises dramatically above its surroundings, creating a breathtaking view that inspires both awe and respect. Literally translated into “the Mountain Spirit” Mt Manaslu is not only a physical challenge but also a spiritual adventure. Reaching Manaslu Base Camp itself is an achievement, requiring a week-long trek through remote trails and rugged terrain and crossing the famous Larkya La Pass. This path to the base camp, however, is not just a stepping stone but an integral part of the Mt Manaslu Expedition, offering experiences at every turn! This expedition with Peaceful Nepal Treks and Tours combines the serenity of untouched nature, the warmth of local culture, and the thrill of tackling one of the most remote and less crowded trails in Nepal!
The first successful ascent of Mt Manaslu was made in 1956 by a team of Japanese and Nepali climbers, marking the beginning of a long legacy of exploration and achievement. Since then, only about 3,000 climbers have reached its summit, making it one of the less-crowded peaks compared to others in the Himalayas. However, the climb is not without its risks! This climb is not recommended for beginners but for those with more advanced skills, endurance, and technical knowledge. Despite its demands, the allure of the summit and the sense of accomplishment it offers continue to draw adventurers from across the globe! The trek to the Manaslu Base Camp begins from Dharapani, one of the end village of the famous Manalsu Circuit trek in Nepal and located in the Annapurna region. From there the trail leads up towards the Larkya La Pass which gives access to the Manaslu region. These days of trekking are just amazing for the views, with vibrant rice terraces cascading down hillsides, crystal-clear waterfalls tumbling into pools and streams below, and dense forests! As you climb higher, the air grows crisper, and the sights become more surreal. Along the way, you might spot water buffalo grazing lazily or catch a glimpse of rare wildlife like the elusive musk deer. For the truly fortunate, a snow leopard might reveal itself! Reaching Manaslu Base Camp at an altitude of 4,700m/15,420ft is a moment of accomplishment in itself. Base camp is surrounded by towering peaks and glacial landscapes, offering a stark yet stunning view to the greenery of the lower trails. It serves as the starting point for climbers aiming for the summit of Mt Manaslu and provides a space to rest, acclimatize, and prepare for the challenges ahead. Acclimatization is an essential part of the journey, allowing your body to adjust to the thinner air and reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Here, you’ll embark on short hikes to higher altitudes, testing your limits and building the stamina needed for the ascent. Peaceful Nepal Treks and Tours expert climbing guides are every step with you, guiding and training to make sure you reach the summit! The climb to the summit is a test of endurance, skill, and determination. The route involves navigating the Manaslu Glacier, crossing crevasses, and tackling steep ice walls! Climbers pass through a series of camps, each strategically placed to aid in acclimatization and preparation. Camp I, located at 5,700m/18,700ft, marks the beginning of the climb, while Camp II and Camp III, at 6,400m/20,997ft and 6,800m/22,310ft, take you closer to the summit. The final camp or Camp IV, perched at 7,400m/24,278ft, is the launching point for the Mt Manaslu summit push. The ascent requires a careful balance of mental focus, physical strength, and teamwork. Guided by our experts and equipped with safety gear, climbers take on this formidable challenge, step by step, with their eyes set firmly on the summit!

The best time for a Mount Manaslu expedition is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons. Spring, spanning from March to May, offers moderate temperatures, clear skies, and vibrant landscapes adorned with blooming rhododendrons. This season is ideal for acclimatization and provides a stable environment for climbing. Autumn, from September to November, is equally favorable, with crisp weather, unobstructed mountain views, and dry trails. Both seasons ensure optimal conditions for trekking and climbing, reducing the risks posed by harsh weather and avalanches. Avoid the monsoon season (June to August), which brings heavy rainfall and increases the chances of landslides, or winter (December to February), when extreme cold and deep snow can make the climb treacherous.
Climbing Mount Manaslu is a demanding endeavor, both physically and technically. Standing at 8,156 meters, it requires a high level of fitness, stamina, and prior experience with high-altitude climbs. The ascent involves navigating glaciers, crossing crevasses, and scaling steep sections using fixed ropes. Technical skills such as using crampons, ice axes, and ropes are essential. Acclimatization is crucial to avoid altitude sickness, as the journey involves prolonged exposure to high altitudes. While the trek to the base camp is moderate, the climb itself is strenuous, with temperatures dropping significantly as you ascend. This expedition is recommended for experienced climbers who have summited peaks above 6,000 meters and are well-versed in mountaineering techniques.
The Manaslu expedition requires several permits, including a Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), and an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). Additionally, climbers need a Mountaineering Expedition Permit issued by the Nepal government. The Restricted Area Permit is mandatory as Manaslu lies in a controlled region to preserve its natural and cultural heritage. These permits can be obtained through a registered trekking agency like Peaceful Nepal Treks and Tours, which handles all the paperwork on behalf of climbers. It’s important to note that permits are issued only to groups accompanied by a licensed guide, ensuring safety and adherence to regulations. Costs for these permits vary based on the season and duration of the expedition.
During the trek to Manaslu Base Camp, climbers stay in lodges that provide basic amenities, including beds, blankets, and shared bathrooms. The lodges offer a variety of meals, such as dal bhat (rice with lentils and vegetables), noodles, soups, and local bread. Once at the base camp, the accommodation shifts to camping. Tents are set up for sleeping, dining, and cooking, and meals are prepared by an experienced expedition cook and support team. The food at base camp is designed to be nutritious and energy-rich, including soups, rice, pasta, meat, and snacks, ensuring climbers remain well-fed and energized. Drinking water is either boiled or purified to prevent health issues. Peaceful Nepal Treks and Tours ensures that accommodations and meals are hygienic, comfortable, and suited for high-altitude conditions.
Safety is the top priority for Peaceful Nepal Treks and Tours. The company employs experienced and certified guides and Sherpas who are well-trained in high-altitude climbing, first aid, and rescue operations. Climbers are provided with comprehensive briefings before the expedition, covering safety protocols, equipment use, and acclimatization practices. The itinerary is carefully designed to allow gradual acclimatization, minimizing the risk of altitude sickness. Regular health checks are conducted during the climb, and oxygen cylinders and medical kits are readily available. Weather conditions are monitored closely, and any signs of danger, such as avalanches or storms, prompt immediate action to ensure climbers’ safety. Additionally, the company manages all logistics, from permits to emergency evacuation plans, so climbers can focus entirely on their journey.
