The Upper Mustang Trek is a 16-day journey into one of Nepal’s most remote and culturally preserved regions. Located in the rain-shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, Upper Mustang features a dramatic trans-Himalayan landscape, ancient Tibetan-influenced villages, and centuries-old monasteries. Once a forbidden kingdom, the region still maintains its traditional lifestyle, making the trek a unique blend of cultural exploration and high-altitude adventure.

Cost and Itinerary

The cost of the Upper Mustang Trek is higher than standard treks due to restricted area permits and mandatory guide requirements. A 16-day itinerary typically includes airport transfers, domestic flights, accommodation, meals during the trek, permits, guide and porter services, and ground transportation. The itinerary is designed with gradual altitude gain, allowing time for acclimatization and exploration, especially in Lo Manthang.

Wi-Fi and Connectivity

Wi-Fi and mobile connectivity in Upper Mustang are limited and unreliable. Some lodges may offer Wi-Fi at an extra cost, but the signal is often slow and inconsistent. Nepal Telecom (NTC) has better coverage than private networks in most areas, though complete network outages are common. Trekkers should be prepared for extended periods without internet access.

Gadgets and Electronics

Electricity is available in most villages, usually powered by solar energy, but charging facilities may cost extra. Power supply can be inconsistent, so carrying a power bank or solar charger is highly recommended. Cold temperatures at higher elevations can drain batteries quickly, so keep electronics warm and conserve power when possible.

Level of Difficulty

The Upper Mustang Trek is considered moderate in difficulty. The daily walking hours range from 5 to 7 hours on well-defined trails, with some steep ascents and descents. Although the altitude is not extremely high compared to other Himalayan treks, the dry climate, wind, and remoteness add to the challenge.

Preparation and Fitness

Good physical fitness and basic trekking experience are recommended for this trek. Regular walking, cardio exercises, and leg-strength training before the trip help build endurance. Mental preparation is also important, as facilities are basic and weather conditions can be unpredictable in this remote region.

Permits

Upper Mustang is a restricted area, requiring special permits. Trekkers need an Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit and an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). These permits must be arranged through a registered trekking agency, and independent trekking is not allowed.

Guide and Porter

Hiring a licensed guide is mandatory for the Upper Mustang Trek. A knowledgeable guide enhances safety, manages permits, and provides cultural insights into the region. Porters are optional but highly recommended, allowing trekkers to enjoy the journey without carrying heavy loads and reducing physical strain.

Weather and Seasons

The best seasons for the Upper Mustang Trek are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). Unlike other regions, Upper Mustang lies in a rain-shadow area, making it suitable for trekking even during the monsoon months. Weather is generally dry and windy, with cool mornings and evenings.

Health and Safety

Altitude sickness is less common but still possible, so proper acclimatization and hydration are essential. Basic medical facilities are limited, so carrying a personal first-aid kit is important. Trekkers should follow their guide’s advice, walk at a steady pace, and report any discomfort immediately.

Transportation and Flights

The trek usually begins with a scenic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, followed by trekking towards Kagbeni and beyond. Flight schedules can be affected by weather conditions, so flexibility in travel plans is important. Road access is limited and rough in some sections, adding to the region’s remoteness.

Food and Drinks

Meals during the trek are provided at local teahouses and lodges. The menu is simple but nourishing, commonly including dal bhat, noodles, soups, potatoes, rice, and Tibetan bread. Bottled water is available but expensive; using water purification tablets or filters is recommended.

Accommodation and Facilities

Accommodation in Upper Mustang consists mainly of basic teahouses and lodges. Rooms are simple, usually twin-shared, with limited heating. Facilities such as hot showers and charging points may be available at extra cost, especially in higher villages.

Packing and Gear

Proper packing is essential due to the region’s dry climate and strong winds. Key items include layered clothing, a warm down jacket, windproof outerwear, sturdy trekking boots, sun protection, and personal toiletries. Trekking poles, sunglasses, and a good sleeping bag are also highly recommended.

Insurance and Visa

Comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation is mandatory. Trekkers must also obtain a Nepal tourist visa, which can be acquired on arrival at Kathmandu airport or from Nepali embassies abroad.
