Planning for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in 2026, the first and most important step is to get a Chinese Visa and Tibet Permit. Entering Tibet, an autonomous part of China, requires a special entry regulation for foreign citizens. They cannot enter Tibet only with a Chinese visa, and trekking solo is strictly prohibited.
Trekkers must book their journey through the licensed tour operator and must hire the licensed Tibetan guide, including a private vehicle for their trip. Your tour agency will obtain the necessary permit, help to process your Chinese visa and complete travel formalities before you can start your pilgrimage journey.
Here we will explain how to find the right tour agency for the Kailash tour, how to apply for a permit and visa and the cost involved. Whether you want to visit Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from India, Nepal, the USA, Europe, Australia, or any other part of the world, this guide covers everything that you are searching for.
Special note: Chinese visa policy is complex and is subject to change without prior notice. Always verify the latest visa and permit requirements with your tour operator or the Chinese embassy.
What Is the Tibet Travel Permit(TTP)?
Tibet Travel Permit(TTP) is a special entry document which is issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB) under the Chinese government. With TTP, all foreign passport holders are legally allowed to enter the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). Foreign tourists cannot board a train, take a flight or even use the road to Lhasa without showing a TTP-the Chinese government controls who can enter and for how long.
Why Is the Tibet Permit Different from a Chinese Visa?
Many people are confused about Chinese Visas and Tibet permits. Think like this, a Chinese visa allows you to enter China, but Tibet is like a restricted zone inside China, which needs a separate TTP as an inner visa.
Many people assume that a Chinese Visa is enough, but in reality, you need both.
Along with the Tibet permit and Chinese Visa some other local permit is necessary depending upon the itinerary and areas.

Tibet Travel Tips for Kailash Yatra
- Kailash Kora is challenging, so start physical training at least 3 months in advance to maintain physically fit—your fitness matters.
- Buy travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking. Medical emergencies at Kailash are life-threatening. Standard insurance may not cover you.
- Carry cash in Chinese yuan (CNY). ATMs in the remote parts of Tibet are limited. Your agency can advise how much cash to bring.
- Download offline maps. Google Maps may not work inside Tibet. Use maps.me or offline maps.
- Respect Tibetan culture. Walk clockwise around Kailash (the Tibetan Buddhist direction). Remove shoes before entering monasteries. Dress modestly.
- Stay hydrated. High altitude means your body needs more water than usual.
- Do not book with unlicensed agents. If an agency says you can travel solo in Tibet or does not mention a mandatory guide, it is not legitimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a Tibet permit on my own without a travel agency?
No. Only a licensed Tibet travel agency registered with the Tibet Tourism Bureau can apply for a Tibet permit on your behalf. This rule has no exceptions for foreign tourists.
Is the Tibet permit and the Chinese visa the same thing?
No. They are two separate documents. A Chinese visa allowed you to enter China, but a Tibet Permit allowed you to enter Tibet. Since Tibet is part of China, you need both for the Kailash Yatra.
Is the Kailash Parikrama (Kora) difficult?
Yes, it is physically and mentally demanding. The Kora is 52 km over 3 days, with the highest point at 5,636 m (Dolma La Pass). You do not need mountaineering skills, but you must be healthy, physically fit and properly acclimatized.
Can I do Kailash Yatra without doing the Parikrama?
Yes. If you want to avoid Kailash Parikrama, it is possible. We suggest you hire a horse and do Kora if you are trying to avoid it due to a lack of physical fitness.
What currency should I carry for Tibet?
Carry Chinese Yuan (CNY) — also known as Renminbi (RMB). USD is not widely accepted in western Tibet.
