The Pisang Peak Climb takes you to the summit of a 6,091-meter (19,983 feet) peak, towering above the beautiful Manang Valley. Located in the Far North Mid-West of Nepal, within the Manang District and north of the Annapurna Himalayan ranges, Pisang Peak stands majestically on a high ridge, close to the Chulu group of peaks.

History

The first ascent of Pisang Peak was made by a German national, Mr. Wellenkamp, in 1955. Since then, it has become a popular climb. Most ascents follow the main South-West Ridge route. Listed as a trekking peak, Pisang Peak is graded as PD+, meaning “Per Difficult” in the French and Swiss Alpine Climbing Classifications. The climb is straightforward from the Advanced or High Camp, with some technical sections to navigate.

Who Should Consider This Climb?

Pisang Peak is ideal for trekkers and adventurers looking for an introduction to mountaineering before aiming for higher peaks. The trek and climb to Pisang Peak include exciting drives and a scenic flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, making for a memorable adventure.

The Climb Begins

The journey starts in the warm, lower farming areas of the Lamjung district, gradually ascending to cooler hills. The trek leads through the Manang region, beginning at Dharapani and continuing past the large town of Chame to Pisang Village. After passing through lush forests of tall rhododendron, pine, and fir trees, you enter the windswept Manang Valley.

Acclimatization and Preparation

After spending time acclimatizing in Pisang Village, the adventure continues to a high ridge near Pisang Peak. The Base Camp is set on the ridge above Pisang Village, near the main trekking route of Manang Valley. The camp is situated around the yak summer pastures of the Manang villagers. An additional high or advanced camp is established to ensure a safe and successful climb.

The Climb Itself

Pisang Peak is pyramid-shaped with an undistinguished snow and ice slope. The western flank is guarded by a hanging glacier, making the climb challenging. The route involves a traverse of the summit ridge, connecting to the northern summit. The climb towards the western end of the ridge is problematic due to huge rock slabs, a distinctive feature on this side of the valley. In some conditions, this section may be snow-covered. The final ascent is a steep snow slope leading to the summit without much difficulty.

Spectacular Views

From the summit, climbers are rewarded with a spectacular panorama of the surrounding snow-capped peaks, including Annapurna, Chulu, Gangapurna, and Tilicho. The view extends as far as the Manaslu Himalayas to the east.

The Return Journey

After celebrating the climb, the return trek follows the popular Annapurna Circuit trail, passing through the lovely Manang Village and reaching the end of the valley at Thorang High Camp. From here, a slow, steady climb leads to the top of Thorang-La Pass, offering vistas of the snow-capped Dhaulagiri Himal. The trek then descends to Muktinath, a holy pilgrimage site, before reaching the Kaligandaki Valley and the town of Jomsom. The next morning, a scenic flight takes you to Pokhara, a perfect and picturesque location to conclude your adventure.

Best Seasons for Pisang Peak Climb

The best seasons for the Pisang Peak Climb are spring and autumn/fall.

Spring (March to May):

Spring offers some of the best times for scenic views and pleasant walks. Most days are clear with more sunshine, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Afternoon overcasts with clouds and light snowfall are possible. Late spring, from April to June, is especially ideal, with warmer temperatures and clear views of the snow mountains.

Autumn/Fall (September to November):

Autumn is another high season for trekking, with bright, sunny days and clear views. The mornings and late afternoons are cold, with a chance of light snowfall above 2,000 meters. This season provides crystal clear blue skies, though the days are shorter.
