Ruby Valley Trekking is an exclusive adventure in Nepal’s Far North Mid-West, nestled beneath the Ganesh and Manaslu Himal ranges. This trek offers an exciting journey into sheer wilderness, away from human habitation and villages for several days. The Ruby Valley trek, set on off-the-beaten paths, takes you through scenic landscapes and enchanting forests.

Scenic and Untouched Landscapes

This region is rarely visited due to its remote location, making the Ruby Valley trek a unique adventure. The trek leads through beautiful landscapes with forests of rhododendrons, oaks, pines, and firs, where elusive wildlife like the red panda, mountain goats, Himalayan thar, and snow leopards reside.

Cultural and Natural Exploration

Ruby Valley trekking is more of an exploration than a conventional adventure in the Himalayas. This untouched and pristine region offers an opportunity to experience its natural surroundings. The trek follows the shadow of Ganesh Himal, standing at 7,422 meters. The name Ganesh comes from the Hindu deity with an elephant head, and the southern face of Ganesh Himal IV, also known as Pabil Peak, resembles an elephant’s trunk. The local name, Yangra, means heavenly paradise in Tibetan, reflecting the area’s beauty. Ruby Valley offers a tranquil and pristine environment, covering diverse landscapes with varying climates, from sub-tropical to alpine, and arctic conditions as the trek reaches Sing-La Pass.

Historical and Cultural Insights

The name Ruby Valley comes from the precious ruby stones found in the mountainous rocks, although they are scarce and hard to find. The trek starts with an overland journey from Kathmandu, heading northwest through Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts, near the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges. The trek begins in remote farm villages and passes through areas primarily inhabited by the indigenous Tamang tribes.

Wilderness and Mountain Views

After leaving the villages of Bhalche and Thulo Gaon, the trek enters the mountain wilderness, passing through dense forests of rhododendrons, magnolias, pines, and oaks. The climb to Sing-La Pass offers a spectacular panorama, including views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Jugal Himal, Manaslu, and Annapurna ranges. From Sing-La Pass, the trek descends into the picturesque Ruby Valley, surrounded by green fields, forests, and hills. The journey concludes as the trek heads back to villages and cultivated fields, ending in Dhading Besi, the headquarters of the Dhading district. The last overnight is spent in the remote Mid-West Himalayan hills before an exciting drive back to Kathmandu.

Difficulty Level and Physical Fitness

Ruby Valley Trekking is classified as a moderate to challenging trek. Here are the key points regarding the difficulty and fitness requirements:

  • Altitude: The trek involves high-altitude hiking, with significant ascents and descents. The highest point is Sing-La Pass, which can challenge those not acclimatized to high altitudes.
  • Terrain: The trek features diverse terrains, including steep climbs, rugged paths, and forested trails. Some sections are remote and less frequented, adding to the challenge.
  • Duration: The trek usually spans 10-14 days, requiring sustained physical effort over an extended period.
  • Fitness Level: Trekkers should have a good level of physical fitness, with regular exercise and some prior trekking experience being beneficial. Cardiovascular endurance, leg strength, and stamina are important.
  • Preparation: It is advisable to engage in a fitness regimen before the trek, including aerobic exercises (running, cycling), strength training (squats, lunges), and hiking on varied terrains.

Best Seasons for Ruby Valley Trekking

Spring (March to May): This is one of the best times for scenic views and pleasant walks. Most days are clear with more sunshine from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Afternoon overcasts and light snowfalls are possible. Spring offers longer daylight hours, and temperatures drop to freezing at higher altitudes. It’s an ideal time for nature lovers, with wildflowers in bloom, especially the rhododendrons of various species and colors.
